Whether you’re a consultant, a creative entrepreneur, or a professional services firm, five things are true about your business:
1. You’re pretty amazing at what you do.
If you’re not already amazing, then you have a burning desire to be amazing. People can’t help but fall in love once they work with you. You just need more of them to see you the way they will when you work together. Say, with the right positioning, packaging, messaging, and copy.
2. You see possibilities in the craziest ideas.
You hear a ridiculous idea and say, “Hmm, that’s a ridiculous idea. Let’s talk about how that could work, or how a different version of this could work. How about this way? Or this way?” Flinging ideas back and forth until an epiphany happens is one of your favorite activities.
3. You have a growth-oriented mindset.
You understand that marketing isn’t just an event. It’s a slow process that rewards consistency. You believe in making decisions quickly and moving forward, then adjusting as you go.
4. You operate sustainably.
You want to grow, but not at the expense of value and likability. If you’re not already profitable, then you’re willing to work really hard to get there. Including investing in your own growth. You’ve never met a Michael Port you didn’t like.
5. You already get why networking, writing, and speaking are essential for growing a business.
Pick two. If you’re not already doing these things, you’re willing to start tomorrow. You look to how-to books for how-to information. You look to someone like me for big-picture ideas, messaging, and copy. You’re not expecting to find a magical way to avoid networking, writing, and speaking. Copy is just one slice of the marketing pie. And boy, do you have a craving for pie.
